| Location: West 43rd (Manhattan, NYC) Cuisine: Italian Nick's Rating (out of 5): Being of Italian-American decent, going out for Italian food always comes with very high standards to match. Nothing is ever going to compare to my Mom or Grandmother's homemade food. So with that in mind, I will tell you my experience of Tony Di Napoli which is under consideration for dinner one of the nights for the Royal Caribbean Christmas/New Year's sailing 2010 as a pre-cruise restaurant. We arrived at 7:30 and our reservation was in place and they seated us immediately. The first thing you'll notice is the volume of the restaurant, it's LOUD. Coming from an Italian family this isn't anything hard for me to deal with but, my wife and I and the friends who went with us were laughing because we had to say everything twice. The tables are placed together VERY tightly so that wasn't helping the conservation problem. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress and we ordered a bottle of wine. The wine list was good but, not overly impressive. The menu is extensive and served family style (each menu item serves 2 to 3 people). In other words, everything arrives in huge bowls with the intention that everything is to be shared. Anyone who knows me knows I can eat a lot, and, there was even too much food by my standards, not a bad thing since we all went home with doggie bags. We ordered Zucchini Fritti (Fried Zucchini) and Caesar Salad as appetizers. These were both fresh and very good. The Zucchini was bubbling hot and obliviously just made - it was perfectly seasoned and very tasty. The Caesar salad was also very good. Both serving were very generous and if we had ordered one or two more appetizers that would have been a meal in itself. For our main courses we ordered: Spaghetti Bolognese (this is a very heavy meat sauce), Chicken Marsala, and Shrimp Scampi. Overall, I rate each of the dishes good (but remember, I'm hard to please when it comes to Italian food - to get a very good or excellent from me is an absolute rave by most other people's standards). The shrimp and chicken dishes were done very well, the shrimp wasn't overcooked and the chicken was very tender and moist . The Spaghetti Bolognese was ok, I've had better - there was an ingredient in there that I am still trying to pinpoint that didn't go well with the rest of the ingredients. It wasn't bad, just a little different than I have had in the past. Now came the favor part of any meal for me - dessert! Desserts were a tray of mini cannolis, with whipped cream and berries, and a chocolate mousse/vanilla ganache cake. Heaven, absolute heaven! We also ordered coffee which was good as well - not over powering and served at just the right temperature. Overall, I would return to Tony Di Napoli but, in all honesty there are better Italian restaurants in Manhattan. But, for a large group, this restaurant would serve very well - especially if a private room is available. The noise level is one of the biggest disappointments and, while they do have a private party room, it was in use and therefore the manager wouldn't let us take a peak at it last night. We will be going to Carmine's next weekend to make a side by side comparison. |

Is that restaurant on 46th St. and Avenue of the Americas? Actually it's on 43rd between 6th and 7th - you've probably passed by it a million times, it's in the Casablanca Hotel. |
