I'm going through the specials on the board and I see Host RDeagazio is offering a Baltics/Russia cruise on Jewel of the Seas
As you may know, I'm a photographer and I think this might be an
awesome opportunity. What can you tell me about cruising the Baltics?

  • Weather
  • Sites not to be missed
  • Anything you'd like to recommend/share

Thanks! I'm posting this in the Ports of Call board too.

Ronnie, I've been to the Baltics/Russia twice and it is one of the best itineraries out there (in my opinion).

Can't help you about Jewel of the Seas, we haven't sailed on her but, maybe someone can shed some light.

Weather in a word - nice! Both times we went it was July and while most of the US was in heat waves we enjoyed temperatures in the 60s and 70s. And somehow, both times, we had absolutely no rain - I'm sure this is dumb luck on our part.

Sightseeing/What Not To Miss - Just about everything is a not to be missed experience. In Russia be sure to see Catherine Palace and my personal favorite the Hermitage. If your trip includes Copenhagen, Denmark a trip to Tivoli is a must see. If you go to Helsinki, I loved the train ride in Porvoo.

As a photographer, you are going to have opportunities around every corner to snap wonderful shots of landscapes, ports and landmarks. I can't recommend this itinerary highly enough!

Have a wonderful time!

The Jewel is a wonderful ship and and Marie said, the itinerary is amazing. We took this cruise in July, and I've asked Tina to post my review for your reading pleasure.

The Peterhof was our favorite sightseeing venue - we did a Denrus tour that went there, Catherine's Palace, the Hermitage, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, a hydrofoil ride, a canal ride and St. Isaacs. We also did the folkloric show offered through RCI in the evening of the first day.

I'll buck the popular trend and say that, unless you're really an art museum person, you can skip the Hermitage. Part of the problem was that there were 5 cruise ships in port and it was packed - even though our guide took us in via the exit and we bypassed the line getting in, we were cheek by jowl once inside. Also, you have to rush through the place, which is huge, and according to the art history teacher in our group, we saw the "famous" stuff rather than the "good" stuff. I don't know whether another guide would have done it differently, but I do know that once was too much for me. In hindsight, I would have gone with a tour of the subway system - believe it or not, it's supposed to be amazing, as the Communists put a lot of otherwise unemployed people to work making the stations works of art in their own right. Just a suggestion.

Funny two of the same posts in a row. I'm going to post this review for you first:

A very worthwhile read, great job Critterchick! And, I will tell you that we have also been eye-balling the July 10 2008 Baltic cruise on Jewel as well. Still waiting for vacation permission before booking and making it official.

And, if Host Bob is escorting the group - to me - that's one more reason to go. Nothing beats having your TA on the sailing with you!

Still have cabins available Host Bob?

I can tell you that Bob will book some great excursions for you, too. He is very familiar with Scandinavia, and always knows what will please his groups.

Thanks Jean!!

Ronnie-In Russia, I have a private guide and driver for the 2 full days of touring, including a dinner and show on the overnight. In the other ports, there will be a combination of private tours and free time to explore the ports. I'll also be escorting this trip and there are several surprises instore.

Sounds interesting Host Bob - are the excursions you mentioned included in the price?

No, the price is for the cruise only. The excursions in Russia will be about $200.00 USD per person for both days.

The excursions in the other ports are still in the planning stages, but they should be approx. $20.00 pp each.
