I would like to know what cruise line a travel agent would recommend for a family of 6 with 4 kids of varying ages. My kids are 15,13,3, and 1. I'm wondering what would really entertain the teens and keep the little ones busy so mom and dad can have some time alone. We've done disney and dont want to spend that much money right now. Would you recommend 2 rooms or a family stateroom of some sort. Thanks for any input.

Penny

Hi Penny,

I would recommend a Freedom Class ship from Royal Caribbean. They have the rock walls, flow rider, ice skating rink, basketball court and H20 Zone water park for kids.
Family staterooms are usually the first to sell out. If a family stateroom is not available I would recommend two cabins either next to each other, or perhaps you can get a balcony and an inside cabin across the hall!
The 1 year old is too young for the kid's club but they do have Fisher Price Playgroups during the cruise.

I hope that helps!

Thanks Jeannie...RCCL has been pricier than others. I was pricing a one week cruise in March 2010 and they were $3000 more for 2 insides....of course that was the oasis. I still dont have firm spring break dates...so I'm not quite ready to book. I keep changing my mind on which cruise line to pick

I'm not a TA but.....
I would get two rooms. The family cabins tend to be pricier during the school holidays and summer. We usually do a balcony and an inside, like Jeanie recommends.

I would recommend a Voyager class ship on Royal as well. There is still a TON to do for all ages, without the higher prices of the Freedom class (and certainly the Oasis class).

And I would definitely recommend two adjoining cabins versus one larger one. Then you get two closets, two bathrooms, extra space, without the higher costs. I always do this, even for 2 adults and 2 kids.

With a 1 year old, Royal doesn't offer daycare (you have to be three). But the kids programs otherwise are great.

Please let me know if you have questions, or would like quote on options. Mexico (on the Mariner - the newest of the Voyager class) is running very low in prices right now, so you can probably pull off a great deal.

Thanks,

Oasis will be definitely more than Voyager or Freedom class ships ... now if you are shooting for Spring Break, that will be higher (more demand) than off peak weeks.

Thanks for the great advice. Once I know our spring break I'll ask for quotes. Carnival Dream is also one of my options.

Not a TA, but Oasis will be more expensive, no doubt. The ship launches in Dec 09, so March 2010 is just a little over 3 months away from the first sailing. The demand was pretty high for Oasis as soon as bookings opened. Look for a Freedom class, meaning Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas or Independence of the Seas....then check the prices for the Voyager classes.

If you go on Carnival with a 1 year old, you will need to take an inflatable pool. The Freedom class has a Baby Splash Zone. And the RCCL ships have in cabin sitting for children 1 and over.

yes the prices on oasis are crazy for a 7 day cruise. penny - try to make it a cruise group and get your cruise for free. see if there is something you can do that won't conflict with another group and do it. wait until RCL goes to $4 share and buy 100 share of RCL and use it every time you cruise for $100 - 250 obc. in fact, on the christmas cruise it will be good for $250. then there is usually a savings certificate for anywhere from $25 up off the price. also, watch the prices like crazy. i know i'm obsessive compulsive, but i will check the prices twice or 3 times a day and i have caught the prices drop as much as $350 per cabin at times. make sure you clear your cookies before you go to the website because sometimes it stores the info and you don't get new prices.

Thanks Pat..I still dont have my dates confirmed...but it looks like our spring break will be from a wednesday to a wednesday which is really odd. So I'm not sure if I am taking 2 or kids. I am leaning towards carnival since they have a great kids program and they are so affordable

Penny,

Oasis will be expensive. Spring Break will be expensive.

The Family Oceanview cabins may allow for only one cabin, but I'd get two. Even with only 3 kids, I book 2 cabins when the whole family goes.

If RCL is too expensive, look at Carnival or NCL. Those are about your only cheaper options. Both have decent kids clubs for the real little ones, as well as teen clubs for the older ones.

Penny, the Carnival Dream has some ocean view cabins with a bath and a half, which could really come in handy for the family. Coupled with their great kids program, it might be a good choice for your family.

Carnival also has Early Saver Rates which are considerably lower than their best fares. The deposits are non refundable but some of the 3rd party insurance companies offer cancel for any reason insurance in case you need to cancel the cruise. If prices come down, and you are eligible for the lower rate, the difference would be refunded in the form of on board credits.

Carnival doesn't offer military rates on every sailing and with the Dream being the latest and the greatest ship, they may not offer them at all. I'd be happy to price out some options for you when you get some dates. January will likely be less than spring break.

Mindy
