What are your favorite hotels?

For me, it's Bellagio and Venetian, going to try Wynn next time!

I'm going to be all alone when I say this, I cannot stand going to Las Vegas!

I've not been in over a year, the last few trips were because of someone elses plans, not mine! If we never go again I'll not miss it at all. I've probably been there 25 times or so, I used to like it in my early 20's.

I'm not a gambler, I can't stand the crowds, the traffic, it all looks so cheesy to me. I have such a low tolerance for cigarettes and it seems the whole place just reeks, even non-smoking rooms, I always feel sick for a few days after returning home.

The one thing I do like is the shows, if I could fly in, see a show and fly out, that would be great for me.

Give me a cruise any day Very Happy Exclamation

lol! KKathy, you sound just like my brother! He went once and claims never again! But, I have to agree, if it's between a cruise and Las Vegas, the cruise wins every time!

My favorite hotel: Ceasers for gambling - for some reason I always seem to win there. As for accommodations, give me the new MGM Signature rooms, they're wonderful. I haven't tried Wynn yet but, have heard only positive things about it.

My husband long ago mastered driving around Vegas and avoiding traffic ... the monorail might help a bit too, but haven't used it yet myself ... we actually like to stay off strip at the Las Vegas Hilton or Rio Suites, and shuttle to the strip if necessary.

Now if you are going to actually compare Vegas to a cruise, I have to agree that cruising wins. You can gamble on a cruise ship, meals and entertainment are included, and cruising prices out less than Vegas on a head to head comparison.

no, you are not all alone. We have probably been to Vegas, over many years close to 100 times, maybe more. When I was a kid, growing up in So Calif my parents introduced me the Sin city. Vegas until the last 10 years was as much fun for me as a cruise, not anymore. In fact we have a wonderful time share we are going to sell in Vegas because we just don't like the place. The traffic, high cost of everything, crowds, unfriendly people: you name it? We do love to gamble (not high rollars) so we get our fix in Laughlin.

In fact we will renew our wedding vows in Laughlin next May.

I am not even crazy over the shows in Vegas anymore, not for $100 plus.

We like the Hilton as well, or, as I mentioned in the last remarks, we use our time share, just happens to be at the Hilton. Talk about mastering driving, we thought we had too until we were there for a week over Memorial Day. I won't go into the traffic situation, but beleive me I have never seen anything like it, not even in NYC> One example: reservations for Sunday brunch CC Steak house (btw best brunch ever) They were for 1:30, the last seating of the day. We left the Flamingo time share at 12:15, hoping to get seated early. We missed our reservation as we didn't even get parked til almost 2pm. of course Valet was full as was most the other parking. yes, it was Memorial Weekend, but we go the same time every year.

Have you tried Tunica yet?

Oh My God!! A chat about Las Vegas!! Count me in!!

We have been to Las Vegas 5 times in the last 6 years. We have stayed at TI, MGM Grand, NY NY & the Mirage!!

We don't gamble, I don't drink & hubby only drinks a little . . .so what do we do in Vegas you ask!?? Well, we see the cirque du soleil shows - we've seen them all!! We go ATV riding in the dessert, we take tours - out to hoover dam, the Grand Canyon, etc. We have been to Red Rock Canyon - awesome sight!!

We also just like to walk the strip - Vegas is a great place to people watch.

We usually stay 3 nights - get in a good massage on the last day!!

We have our next trip planned for April 2008!! I'm thinking we'll stay at the Luxor - in a spa suite with views of the strip!!

Viva Las Vegas!!

As for getting around - we tried a car the first trip - forget it! We take the bus - for $ 5.00 a day you can ride anywhere on the line - even out of town! They have bus stops on every corner & they are so entertaining!! You meet people from all over the world on the bus!! They are easy to use & if you're lucky you can get the front row seat up stairs & just watch Vegas go by!

Yeah, it's a cheesy place, smells bad, etc. But for some reason - we just LOVE it!!

Every year we have gone - they have opened a new Cirque show - KA clown at the MGM was the best!! Last year we saw a similar type show at the Wynn - so we have to go back.

We chose the Luxor farao for next years trip as we saw it on BEST HOTELS on the travel channel & they have a buffett for breakfast & lunch for under $ 10.00!! PLUS the spa rooms!! That's a deal in my book!! We always go in the off season - I couldn't stand SUMMER sunny in Las Vegas!!

Another Vegas fan here! Maybe one day we can have a "group" trip there Very Happy

My favorite hotel? It used to be Mandalay Bay but now...it's Wynn. I've even come up with a corn-ball slogan for it...
With a name like Wynn, how can you lose?

Ok, I know, it's bad Embarassed

We have only walked through the Wynn and I did play slots. Actually won about $40 on the penny ones. The place is beautiful; class from start to finish. The location could be better.

You are not alone. My hubby and I went to Vegas and hated it. We don't gamble. It was our first and last time. We went because there was no snow for our ski trip x-mas of '06. We went for a week, I know a long time for Vegas but we did do other things like the helicopter for the Grand Canyon which was great, the Valley of Fire, we hired a limow/driver to go out there and that was great.

We hired again a limo/driver to take us down the strip at night and to "old Vegas" my husband wanted to photograph the lights and stop whenever so this worked for us.

I go to NYC 2x a year, born and raised there so I see shows there, better. The only show I liked was this guy can't remember the name that does song impersonations. He was good. I see better shows on broadway.
Food was ok, but I can get better in NYC. The worse thing the thing I hate most about LV is the distance. We were at the Venitian unfortunately. I wanted the Four Seasons, or the Wynn or the Bellagio but they were all sold out for the week I wanted only a day here or there. I hated the smell at the lobby of the Venitian, my hubby got sick on it. The distance from the front door to the room is a joke. I have a bad back and that was a hike even to the spa from the room. Rooms were nice, room service ok.
Way too many people. I did like the Ice Bar is it at the Mandalay at the Russian Bar, that was fun. Actually the best food was at Puck's restaurants. Emeril's steakhouse was good too and the lunch at Olive's at the Bellagio was good and The Country Club at the Wynn was a good lunch. Otherwise Bouchon was not good at all.
Now send me back to Carmel, that's what I call good food, great place, hubby and I love Carmel.

Vegas, we love Vegas! We have stayed at the Bellagio, the Venetian, the Mirage, the Luxor and the Wynn.

I can't stay at the Venetian anymore because of the perfume they pipe through the place that drives me crazy.

The Wynn is by far our favourite although it's been a while since we've been able to get down there. Too many cruises I think! Very Happy My favourite steakhouse in Vegas is Delmonicos in the Venetian.

The one thing I found about the Wynn that stands head and shoulders over the other hotels on the strip is their attitude towards service.

All staff were always smiling, and friendly. They really make you feel like they are happy you are there. The slots are/were (haven't been for a while) slightly looser than some on the strip, but even the dealers at the table made you feel good if you lost a hand. They'd comisserate etc.

The rooms are lovely, and they have some really good deals at times. I signed up on their website and get emails from them regarding deals.

The restaurants are very good, as is the buffet, with lots of cooked to order things and their fruits and salads are quite fresh, and I'm not a huge buffet fan. We particularly liked their Asian teppanyaki restaurant.

We had booked a b2b on the Solstice for next year for our 10th anniversary, which we canceled. I think we are probably now going to spend a week in Vegas and then a week on a HAL ship, since it's been so long since we've been able to get to Vegas.

Just coming back from Vegas and they are building new properties all over, still. But they are having a hard time filling the rooms they have especially during the week and are offering some great deals on rooms.

I didn't see much discounts on the non-room items.

I have never been. I would love to go. We plan to do a cross country drive from Montreal maybe in Sept Oct drive south then west hitting places we have never been. Spend say 5 days in Vegas then onto San Francisco, Seattle , Vancouver then head home. 4 weeks in all. Any recommendations on what to visit on the way ?

About Vegas, is it best to book in advance or will ther be lots of vacancies at that time ? Also is it safe to wander the streets at night ?
Is it best to stay at a hotel with a Casino or one without ? Is driving around it worthwhile or just park for 5 days and walk. Are there good places to dance. Any famous places to dance. It is our hobby collecting places Smile . We have danced at the Rainbow room in NYC and the Moulin Rouge in Paris.

I'm still doing my best to get a group trip to Vegas to happen one of these days will pull it off. In the meantime...

With all the hotels in Vegas, both casino and non-casino hotels offer great rates. So do some checking around before you book. And, yes, reservations are recommended. I've only rented a car once in Vegas and we only used it to go to Hoover Dam, it wasn't worth it. You have a monorail, bus service and heck even walking on the Strip is enjoyable because there is so much going on, and, yes Vegas is safe but, keep to the Strip at night time and, use common sense for visiting any large city. As far as dancing - all the major hotels have discos.

Hi - I would love to help you plan it (not an agent, just a travel nut here) with suggestions if you can give me a clue of your route between Montreal and Vegas. Are you interested in the National Parks, cities, or a mix/variety of things?

Having lived in Las Vegas and San Francisco for many years - I can suggest some places to eat, dine, etc. You will already have your vehicle with you or I would second what Nick said about not needing to have a car for anything other than the Hoover Dam when in Vegas. In addition to the city bus system and cabs galore, anyone flying in can take shuttle vans outside the baggage claim area. There are several companies with vans to the hotels Downtown and along or near the Strip for approx. $6 each way.

Though none of the major events take place in the fall, there are large conventions, boxing matches etc. sprinkled throughout the year so DO book in advance. There are wonderful National Parks within a four hour drive of Las Vegas that I could tell you about if interested.

The drive to San Francisco takes about 10 hours from Vegas via the desert and Bakersfield. Or you could go via L A if there is anything you want to see there. L V to L A is about 5 hours in off peak traffic. L A to S F is about 6.5 hours - again depending on traffic. And in fall you won't have weather problems in the mountain passes as that is the absolute best time of year with nearly all days being warm and sunny. Sept. is actually the warmest month of the year for S.F. so it should be a glorious drive. Cool

Safety is not a problem in the hotel districts of either L V or S F. But you do need to be cautious if you stray far from the beaten path. I can suggest various neighborhoods in S F for lodging because, unlike Vegas, you will have to pay dearly for parking if you stay downtown.

Dancing - Vegas is more of a disco than ballroom scene. There is a version of Studio 54 there but that is not legendary in the same way as the Rainbow Room or the Moulin Rouge. San Francisco has some nice hotel dance clubs at the Top of the Mark (Hopkins) and the Sir Francis Drake. I am sure we can all help you plan a wonderful trip so just keep asking!

hi Tad, that is a very kind offer.
My initial thoughts (quite open to change)were to take the following route :-
Montreal-Buffalo-Cincinnati-Nashville-Memphis-New Orleans-San Antonio-El Paso-Tombstone-Flagstaff ( meteor crater)-Vegas- San Fran-Seattle-Vancouver-Banff-Montana-N.Dakota-Chicago-Montreal.

We have friends in SF, Seattle and Vancouver to show us around. Seen LA quite enough. Drives out of Vegas are certainly of interest.

Hi LordofTime -

Did you get the fairly long response I sent via Personal Message?

I don't know if there is a lag time or I am just unsure how it works but none of my messages from today are showing up on the board so I wanted to check to see that you got my suggestions for National parks, upper midwest, New Mexico etc.

aloha - Tad
